Russia defends deal with Iran
www.chinaview.cn 2005-03-01 14:30:48

BEIJING, Mar. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- Russia's nuclear energy chief says the nuclear fuel supply deal signed with Iran will help stop the spread of nuclear material. This is in response to US criticism. Washington views Tehran as a sponsor of international terrorism.

The head of Russia's Atomic Energy Agency, Alexander Rumyantsev, says the deal will provide Iran with power plants, and Moscow will take back all spent nuclear fuel. This will keep Iran from developing a full nuclear cycle, which includes enrichment, the process for weapons grade uranium. Rumyantsev says the IAEA will control the return of the spent fuel. The Russian-built Bushehr power plant is a key element of Tehran's nuclear program, which the United States suspects is aimed at developing nuclear weapons.

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, who is in Luxembourg to attend a meeting, also defended his country's cooperation with Iran on nuclear power plants. He says the Busheher plant will be operated under the close supervision of the IAEA.
