VIENNA, Feb. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohamed El Baradei said here Monday he would urge Iran to provide more information on nuclear issue at the four-day IAEA Board of Governors' meeting which started Monday morning.
ElBaradei told reporters just before the meeting that he hoped that Iran
will cooperate with the international community on the issue.
However, the IAEA has not set any time frame for Iran, he added.
The United States, which believes that Tehran has a covert program to build
nuclear bombs, would like to see the IAEA bring the Islamic republic before the
UN Security Council for possible sanctions while Iran hopes to see the agency
drop its two-year-oldinquest into Tehran's nuclear program.
During his recent fence-mending European tour, US President George W. Bush
said that the issue is still in the stage of diplomatic efforts, but he added
that all options "are on the table".
The US insistence on submitting the issue to the UN Security Council has
little backing from the IAEA board of governors. Britain, France and Germany,
which are holding talks on behalf of the 25-member European Union with Iran,
want more time to work outa deal for Iran to abandon its uranium enrichment
programs. Enditem |
