BEIRUT, Feb. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- The Lebanese parliament opened Monday a special session to vote on a no-confidence motion against the government over the assassination of former prime minister Rafik Hariri two weeks ago.

The session began with a one-minute silence in memory of Hariri, whose assasination was widely blamed here on the government and Syria.

At least 20,000 people held a demonstration in Beirut to coincide with the parliament debate.

Hariri, who was opposed to Syria's interference in Lebanon's internal affairs, was assassinated in a bomb blast in Beirut on Feb. 14.

The Lebanese opposition blamed Syrian and Lebanese authorities for the death of Hariri and urged Syrian forces to pull out before Lebanon's parliamentary elections in May. Enditem กก
