Abbas blames third party for Tel Aviv attack
www.chinaview.cn 2005-02-27 10:11:32

BEIJING, Feb. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Palestinian security forces have arrested two suspected militants after a suicide bombing killed four Israelis at a Tel Aviv nightclub late on Friday night.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has vowed to track down and punish those responsible, saying the bombing was an act of sabotage by a third party.

"There is a third party that wants to sabotage this peace process and this act harms our interests, our way and our goals, and we will not hesitate for a minute to track them down and bring them to justice and punish them."

Palestinian security officials pointed to the Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah, which has been trying to disrupt an informal Mideast truce, as the apparent mastermind of the attack, however Hezbollah has denied the allegations.

The bomber was identified as 21-year-old Abdullah Badran, a university student.

The three main militant groups - Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades - denied involvement.

But Israeli spokesman, Ranan Gissin, says he is skeptical of the Palestinian Authority's attempts to guarantee a halting of suicide attacks through negotiation with extremist factions.

"There cannot be any compromise with terror. The attempt to reach an agreement with Hamas, with Islamic Jihad and maybe in the future with Hezbollah is not going to work. This will prevent any movement and progress towards political negotiation."

Palestinian security officials said they were investigating whether Badran was recruited by local militants from Al Aqsa, which has ties to Abbas' ruling Fatah movement, at the behest of Hezbollah.
