Syria denies role in Tel Aviv bombing

Israel blames Syria for Tel Aviv blast

BEIJING, Feb. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Syria has strongly denied accusations by Israeli Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz that it had a hand in a Tel Aviv bombing later claimed by Islamic Jihad, which killed four Israelis as well as the bomber.

A foreign ministry official said Syria has no connection with this operation and the Damascus office of this Islamic Jihad movement is closed.

Earlier, Israel Army Radio quoted Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz as telling a meeting of security chiefs in Tel Aviv that he had proof directly linking Syria to this attack.

But Syrian officials say the Israeli side knows the identity of the real perpetrator and that he's to be found inside Israel.
