Britain condemns Tel Aviv bomb attack

LONDON, Feb. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- British government has condemned the Friday suicide bombing attack in Israel's Tel Aviv, which killed four Israelis, stressing that the upcoming international meeting scheduled for Tuesday in London would help ensure effective actions against terror.

"This was an appalling and cynical attempt to undermine the genuine progress that we have seen in recent weeks in the search for peace, courageously undertaken by both the Government of Israel and the Palestinian (National) Authority," Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said on Saturday.

Speaking in a statement, Straw said President Mahmoud Abbas has made clear his intent to end the violence and to act against the terrorists who perpetrate it. "I completely endorse his determination to do so."

The foreign secretary said the attack underlined the importance of the Palestinian National Authority's efforts to establish a credible and capable security apparatus, able to respond adequately to the terrorist threat.

Referring to the international conference on the Middle East peace to be held in London next Tuesday, Straw said the meeting "will enable us to hear the P(N)A's own plans for security reform, and to set out how the international community will support those plans."

A suicide bomber detonated a powerful bomb among Israelis waiting outside a seaside nightclub Friday in Tel Aviv, killing four Israelis and himself. The attack, the first such inside Israel since last September, dealt a blow to a looming hope following a mutual cease-fire announced by Israel and the Palestinian side earlier this month. Enditem
