DAMASCUS, Feb. 23 (Xinhuanet) -- A delegation of Hungarian members of parliament on Wednesday voiced support to Syria which faces an international outcry asking it to withdraw from Lebanon. The delegation, headed by Hungarian Parliament Speaker Sili Katalin, lent support to Syria during a meeting with Syrian lawmakers.
"The pressures and challenges, aimed to change
Syria's just position, will passively affect security and stability in the
region," said the visiting delegation.
The Hungarian MPs described Syria's role in the
Mideast peace process as "important and effective" and called for peace in the
region in line with international resolutions.
For their parts, the Syrian lawmakers stressed the
necessity tore store Syria's usurped rights, particularly the return of the
Golan Heights seized by Israel during the 1967 war. They also asked their
Hungarian counterparts to transfer a real image of Syria to the European public
in order to refute "unfair claims which attempted to deform Syria, Arab and
Islamic image in the West."
Syria has been under mounting pressures since the
assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri last week.
Lebanon's opposition groups blamed Syria for Hariri's death and staged massive
protests.
Meanwhile, the United States recalled its
ambassador to Syria shortly after the incident and called for the withdrawal of
the 14,000 Syrian troops from Lebanon while weighing possible sanctions on
Damascus. Enditem |
