LONDON, Feb. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- British food quality
watchdog added 38 more items to a list of food products contaminated with the
illegal dye Sudan 1 on Monday.
The Food Standards Agency said the additional products include sausages, seasonings, ready meals and pizzas
from companies such as supermarket chains Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Waitrose.
The agency published an original list of 357 products
contaminated with the potentially cancer-causing dye on Friday. The dye was
supplied from India to Premier Foods which manufactured a sauce used as a
flavoring in the products.
On Friday, the company said the problem was uncovered
when supplies reached an Italian company which tested for Sudan 1.
Jon Bell, an FSA spokesman, said the agency was
liaising with manufacturers, retailers and local inspection teams to ensure
contaminated products were removed from sale as soon as possible.
"We are making it quite clear to all concerned that
we expect them to have withdrawn all the products from the shelves by Thursday
at the latest," he said.
He added that "it was not sensible for people to be
continuing to eat these products" although there was no immediate risk to health
and overall rise was small.
Customers who find any of the soups, sauces and
ready-made meals in their cupboards to return the packaging to their retailer
for a refund.
The newly announced products took the number of
contaminated food items to 395 and a full list of the products is available on
the FSA website www.food.gov.uk. Enditem
