Canada to earmark more money to fight global warming
www.chinaview.cn 2005-02-19 01:28:55

OTTAWA, Feb. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- The Canadian government may earmarkas much as 6 billion Canadian dollars (5 billion US dollars) in next week's budget to help fight global warming, it is reported here Friday.

According to a report by the English newspaper the Globe and Mail, Sources tell the newspaper, as much as half the money could actually be old or "recycled" funds that were set aside in previous budgets but not spent.

Canada committed itself to the Kyoto global warming pact with aplan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to six percent below 1990 levels by 2012. This would represent a 26 percent reduction from projected 2012 levels.

Canadian greenhouse gas emissions have risen every year since Canada signed on to the protocol in 1997 -- pushing the country 30percent higher than 1999 levels. Enditem
