BEIJING, Feb. 16 -- Togo plans to organize presidential elections within 60
days, following demands from African leaders. A senior official was speaking
Tuesday on condition of anonymity; after regional diplomats met Togo's new
president press for polls. They also called for an immediate end to the
leadership crisis.
Faure Gnassingbe was named president by Togo's army just hours after his
father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, died on February 5th. But opposition factions say
the power transfer violated the country's constitution. Leaders belonging to the
Economic Community of West African States have threatened sanctions, if it Togo
fails to swiftly reverse Gnassingbe's appointment. Under the constitution, the
head of the national assembly should have taken over pending elections in 60
days.
