www.chinaview.cn 2005-02-16 14:22:36

BEIJING, Feb. 16 -- Togo plans to organize presidential elections within 60 days, following demands from African leaders. A senior official was speaking Tuesday on condition of anonymity; after regional diplomats met Togo's new president press for polls. They also called for an immediate end to the leadership crisis.

Faure Gnassingbe was named president by Togo's army just hours after his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, died on February 5th. But opposition factions say the power transfer violated the country's constitution. Leaders belonging to the Economic Community of West African States have threatened sanctions, if it Togo fails to swiftly reverse Gnassingbe's appointment. Under the constitution, the head of the national assembly should have taken over pending elections in 60 days.
