Shanghai job seekers warned to avoid downtown

BEIJING, Feb. 16 -- Human resource experts in the city are telling local job hunters to avoid downtown areas where competition is heated, after the Shanghai Labor and Social Security Bureau publicized a map showing the distribution of jobs in the city for the first time.

"Because another job seeking peak is coming after the Spring Festival, the Shanghai Job Introduction Center made an analysis of last year's position distribution to help job hunters to improve their efficiency," said Zhang Yuan, a spokesman for the bureau.

The map divides the city into five parts.

According to the analysis, downtown areas, mainly referring to Huangpu, Luwan, Jing'an, Changning and Xuhui districts, offered 316,000 positions last year, the most of any of the five areas on the map. Most of the positions were in the service sector.Despite the large number, competition in this area is also fierce, experts pointed out.

For the professional occupations, about five to six people apply for each available job on average.

Experts expect that positions in the city's downtown will still arouse attention of job hunters this year and suggest those looking for work search elsewhere. The northeastern part of the city, including Zhabei, Hongkou, Yangpu and Baoshan districts and Chongming County, is a good choice as not much competition exists."Occupation instructors believe there will be a bright future in this part of the city since this area is undergoing quick development," said Zhang.
