Flood death toll rises to 200 in southwestern Pakistan

    QUETTA, Pakistan, Feb. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Floods, hill torrents, dams burst and torrential rains have so far left 200 dead and morethan 2,000 families homeless in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province.

    Spokesman of the provincial government Razik Bugti told Xinhua here on Saturday that most of the casualties occurred as the ShadiKaur Dam was swept away in unprecedented floods in the catchment areas near southern coastal city Pasni.

    A large number of people are still missing, he added.

    The spokesman said besides Pasni a considerable number of people have also been affected in Mand, Tump and Bal Nigwar areas of Kech District.

    The flood has left about 2,000 people homeless in Gwadar and Kech Districts, he said.

    In Mekran and Lasbela District, more than 2,000 people were also sieged, Razik Bugti said.

    He said, totally 25,000 families have been seriously affected in the floods and hill torrents.

    The rain and flash flood flowing down the mountains also washedaway a dam near southwestern port city Gwadar. The water flooded about 12 villages of the area, he said.

    The spokesman said at least three dams with huge water reservesburst in different places of the province, releasing a huge flood,devastating major parts of the region.

    Some 6,000 forces and 13 military helicopters are participatingin relief and rescue operation in the affected area, he said.

    In Pakistan-held Kashmir, an avalanche disaster killed at least40 people due to weeks of heavy snow.

    In another incident, at least 32 army men were killed Thursday after being hit by an avalanche in the remote Tirah valley in tribal area, bordering Afghanistan. Enditem
