WASHINGTON, Feb. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- The US State Department said onThursday that the six-party talks continue to be "the best, most effective way" to solve nuclear disputes in the Korean Peninsula.

"We will continue to seek a peaceful diplomatic resolution of this issue. Six-party talks, through a multilateral framework, remain, in our view and, I think, in our partners' view, the best, the most effective way to do this," deputy State Department spokesman Adam Ereli told reporters.

"We are prepared to work with the North Koreans to achieve a peaceful, diplomatic solution of this problem, and to contribute to improvement in the life of the North Korean people, but that wecan only fully take these steps once these programs have been completely dismantled."

The dismantlement must be "complete, irreversible, verifiable",he noted.

Ereli made the remarks after Pyongyang admitted on Thursday forthe first time that it has nuclear weapons, and said it would not return to six-party talks designed to solve nuclear issues on the Korean peninsular.

The US intelligence believe that Pyongyang has produced one andpossibly two nuclear weapons, Ereli said.

Prior to Ereli's statement, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Washington remain committed to the six-party talks."We remain committed to a peaceful, diplomatic resolution to the nuclear issue with regards to North Korea."

The six-way talks, presided by China, with participation of theDPRK, the US, the Republic of Korea, Japan and Russia, have stalled since last June as Pyongyang is boycotting the negotiations because of Washington's "hostile policy". Enditem
