Israeli, Palestinian security officers to meet in Gaza

    GAZA, Feb. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Senior Palestinian and Israelisecurity officers are scheduled to meet on Thursday night todiscuss the security issue following renewed Palestinian rocketattacks on Israeli settlements in Gaza, Palestinian sourcesreported.

    The sources said that chief of Palestinian national securityGeneral Musa Arafat and Israeli Army southern commander General DanHariel will meet in an Israeli army base in southern Gaza Strip.The sources said that Arafat would convey the Palestinianprotest over the killing of a Palestinian young man by Israeli armygunfire from a settlement in southern Gaza's Rafah area onWednesday.

    Israeli Army Radio reported that Hariel would ask Arafat to takeactions to stop Palestinian militants firing mortars and rockets atthe settlements, and move against militants.

    Israel on Thursday postponed security coordination talks withthe Palestinians in response to intensive militants' attacks onGaza settlements.

    Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat confirmed that ameeting scheduled with Israeli prime minister Sharon's aide DovWeisglass as a follow-up to Tuesday's summit was cancelled upon anIsraeli request.

    The Islamic militant group Hamas said Thursday it wasresponsible for the predawn mortar attack on the Israelisettlements in southern Gaza as retaliation for Israeli killing ofa Palestinian teenager. Enditem
