Security officials fear attempt on Abbas' life ahead of summit

JERUSALEM, Feb. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli and Palestinian security officials have expressed concern that radical militant groups would attempt to assassinate Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to undermine Tuesday's Sharm al-Sheikh summit, Israel Army Radio reported Monday.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Abbas are expected to announce a mutual cessation of violence at the summit, hosted by Egypt, according to officials on both sides.

Palestinians have also warned the Hezbollah movement has offered more money to Palestinians who would carry out attacks in the territories, especially in the Gaza Strip.

Hezbollah is prepared to pay up to 20,000 US dollars per month to Palestinians who recruit militants, compared to 1,000 dollars in previous years, Palestinian officials said.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Jordanian King Abdullah II will attend the summit. Enditem
