36 killed in fire exchange in Iraq

    BEIJING, Feb. 7 -- Unidentified militants have attacked a police station south of Baghdad, prompting an hour-long gunfight that killed 22 Iraqi security forces and 14 attackers.

    Unidentified militants have attacked a police station south of Baghdad, prompting an hour-long gunfight that killed 22 Iraqi security forces and 14 attackers.

    Iraqi police said the clash broke out on Sunday night, in Mahawil, 80 kilometers south of Baghdad.

    Five Iraqi national guardsmen and 17 police were killed and 18 security personnel were wounded.

    On the same day, in another fire exchange in Mahawil, two Iraqi national guardsmen were killed and three others were injured.

    In another development, one US soldier was killed in a bomb explosion in north of Baghdad, two soldiers were injured.
