BERLIN, Feb. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said Friday that his country is ready to offer more assistance to Iraq.

Speaking after his meeting here with visiting US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Schroeder said that Germany would be more actively engaged in rebuilding the civilian institutions in Iraq.

Germany will also increase its efforts of training Iraqi military personnel and police at camps in the United Arab Emirates, Schroeder said.

On the issue of the Iranian nuclear programs, Schroeder stressed that "Germany, France and Britain are ready to do anything to see that a diplomatic and political solution is achieved".

"We feel that now is the time for our diplomacy to put our alliance to work in the service of great goals," he added.

Rice also agreed that diplomacy still has the chance to solve the Iranian nuclear issue, but she added that "it would only work if there is trans-Atlantic unity."

Rice arrived in Berlin on Friday for a one-day stopover, which is part of her current tour through Europe and the Middle East. Enditem
