Jolie, the Tomb Raider star voted the sexiest woman alive, said Saturday that celebrities
grandstanding as advocates of the poor can do more harm than good.
¡°Celebrities have a responsibility to know absolutely what they¡¯re talking
about, and to be in it for the long run,¡± said Jolie, 29, who has spent four
years as goodwill ambassador to the U.N.¡¯s refugee agency UNHCR.
She has used her pulling power to draw
public attention to humanitarian crises in Chad, Sudan and Sierra Leone, winning
praise from United Nations officials. She is said to have donated one-third of
her income to charity.
¡°Just being an actress doesn¡¯t help me sleep well at night. When I do
something for other people, then I feel my life has value,¡± she said.
Celebrities have taken unprecedented prominence in the World Economic
Forum, held in the Swiss ski resort of Davos. Film stars Richard Gere, Sharon
Stone and Jolie teamed up with musicians Bono, Lionel Richie, Peter Gabriel and
Youssou N¡¯Dour at the business summit to plead for aid to the poor.
Jolie, who recently starred as a fighter pilot in Sky Captain and the World
of Tomorrow, said her role as goodwill ambassador had made her work as a film
star relatively dull.
¡°I can¡¯t find anything that interests me enough to go back to work,¡± she
said. ¡°I¡¯m simply not excited about anything. I¡¯m not excited about going to a
film set.¡±
In October, a poll in Esquire magazine named Jolie the ¡°sexiest woman
alive.¡± That month, she toured Sudan¡¯s Darfur region, calling the humanitarian
crisis there ¡°unbelievably horrible.¡±
