Israel to re-open closed crossings: Palestinian sources
www.chinaview.cn 2005-01-29 21:00:46

GAZA, Jan. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Palestinian security sources said Saturday that the Israeli army has informed the Palestinian side that closed passages and crossings would be re-opened on Monday and Tuesday.

The sources said the Israeli move was a positive sign in the wake of Palestinian efforts to end attacks against Israel and settlements.

The sources said the Rafah crossing, the only exit of the Gaza Strip enclave, will be re-opened in two days.

Israel opened the Rafah crossing last week for one day to enable thousands of Palestinians stranded on the Egyptian side to cross into Gaza.

Israel shut down the crossing in December after two militants carried out a bombing attack against an Israeli army base on the borders between Gaza and Egypt. Five Israeli soldiers were killed in the attack.

The sources also said Israel would open the Karni Commercial Crossing on the eastern borders between Gaza and Israel after it was closed for several weeks following a deadly attack on the crossing.

The re-opening of crossings in the Gaza Strip came following an agreement was reached between Musan Arafat, chief of the National Security, and Aviv Kokhavi, commander of the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip.
