BEIJING, Jan. 28 -- The Chinese government will be investigating how its eight kidnapped nationals entered Iraq.

The Chinese government will be investigating how its eight kidnapped nationals entered Iraq.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said at a press conference in Beijing Thursday that if any illegal activities came to light, the perpetrators would be punished.

The eight are believed to have found jobs in Iraq through an agency based in China.

Kong Quan confirmed that the eight hostages returned to China on Wednesday night and looked to be in good physical condition.

They returned directly to their hometown in southeast China's Fujian Province.
