Lula travels to Porto Alegre to attend World Social Forum

    BRASILIA, Jan. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Brazilian President Luiz I. "Lula" da Silva is to travel Wednesday to the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre to present the Campaign to Combat World Poverty before the 5th World Social Forum, which was inaugurated Wednesday.

ĦĦĦĦLula, who Wednesday night is to make the 1,600-km trip between this capital to the southwestern city of Porto Alegre, has plans to meet on arrival with members of the International Council of the Forum.

    On Thursday, the Brazilian leader will present his campaign, which is driven by a coalition formed by over 100 non-government alorganizations in the world.

    According to the Brazilian media, the direction of the ruling Workers Party (PT) has started in Porto Alegre, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, a strategy to diminish the exposition of Da Silva before the risk he is subject to expressions of protest by the participants in the forum.

    "We the authorities have to inform, respecting political differences. We're going to participate as a ruling party. We don't have to apologize for what we're doing," said National PT President Jose Genoino.

    Different sectors that have been traditional allies of the president have announced the intention to express to him during the Forum their dissatisfaction, considering that since he took Office he abandoned "historical positions" he defended when he wasa left-wing trade-union leader.

    Following his stay in Porto Alegre, Lula will go to the Swiss city of Davos to participate as a special guest in the World Economic Forum, considered as the counterpart of the World Social Forum. Enditem
