US seeks Egyptian support

    BEIJING, Jan. 26 -- US Assistant Secretary of State, William Burns, is in Cairo to push the Middle East peace process.

    Burns told Egyptian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the US is encouraged by Palestinian efforts to restore calm and Israel's response to meet quiet with quiet. He called it the most promising moment for progress between Palestinians and Israelis seen in several years. Burns is also due to meet with President Hosni Mubarak later today. Egypt, a key regional mediator, is the first stop of Burns' Mideast visit.
