BEIJING, Jan. 18 -- Benin's junior keeper Yessouffo Semiou was stabbed dead after his team's embarrassing 3-0 defeat to local rivals Nigeria in the opening match of the African Youth Championship.

Beninese medical sources confirmed the 19-year-old was stabbed late Sunday in Cotonou and taken to hospital where he died from his injuries.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter sent his condolences.

On Saturday the host nation had a difficult match against neighbouring Nigeria in the first group match on the continental tournament, when Semiou had had to pick the ball out of his net three times in front of an angry crowd.
