PARIS, Jan. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Iraqi interim President Ghazi al-Yawar is
expected to leave Paris for Baghdad after a four-day visit to Paris where he got
French authorities' support to the reconstruction of the country still in chaos.
This vi sit came less than three weeks before the Iraqi general elections.
France, strongly opposed to the US-led Iraqi war, would use this occasion
to show its support to the country ravaged by war and increasing violence.
Al-Yawar was received Thursday by French President Jacques Chirac and was invited
for lunch at the French presidential Elysee Palace. The French president
sent him a support message during Iraq's political and economical
reconstruction.
Chirac noted that the national dialogue should be as large as possible,
notably including those who have rejected to violence and wished the Iraqi
general elections on Jan. 30 successful, according to his office.
For his part Yawar answered that "the elections will be 100 percent free and
honest," calling for a participation and represent ativity as large as
possible in these elections on the scheduled date, despite of violence and
boycott.
France also extended his finance support to the war-torn country by
canceling up to 80 percent of Iraqi public debts of more than 4 billion dollars,
said Chirac's office.
Paris also suggested to train 1,500 Iraqi policemen outside the country over
a period of 18 months, parallel to the trainings led by the multinational forces
and NATO, said Friday a spokesman of the Iraqi president.
Before his arriving in Paris on Wednesday, Yawar's entourage said he would
like to thank Chirac for voting the UN resolution 1546 stipulating the
sovereignty transfer to the country.
On the eve of his arrival French Foreign Ministry declared: "This trip will provide
the opportunity to highlight France's determination at the highest levels
to develop a dialogue with the Iraqi authorities."
French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Cecile Pozzo di Borgo the visit would also
give Paris the chance to show "its commitment to the Iraqi people and its support
for the transition process now in progress, which will allow the Iraqi
people to regain power over their own destiny."
The concerns about the French female journalist Florence Aubenas who went missing last Wednesday in Baghdad cast a shadow over Yawar's visit. But the Iraqi president affirmed Thursday after talks with Chirac that "the Iraqi government is doing everything in its power to obtain the release of the French journalist and her guide. Enditem |
