Turkish PM to visit tsunami-hit South Asia in February

ANKARA, Jan. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Turkish private NTV reported Friday that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is to visit tsunami-devastated South Asia on Feb. 3.

Meanwhile, Turkish Directorate General of Emergency Management said two military cargo planes loaded with medical equipment and aid package will fly to Sri Lanka and Indonesia on Sunday.

The humanitarian aids, including two field polyclinics, medical equipment, chlorine tablets, hygienic sets and clothes, will be sent to Banda Aceh region of Indonesia and Colombo, capital of Sri Lanka.

Turkish Red Crescent also distributed six truck-load of aids in Mesjid Kuch camp in Banda Aceh, Anatolia News Agency reported.

Death toll of the horrific disaster has reached over 150,000 since an 8.7-magnitude underwater earthquake struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Dec. 26 and triggered tsunamis which battered the coastlines of the Indian Ocean.

Turkish Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that Turkey had offered tsunami-hit countries aids valued at about 9 million US dollars, and a rescue team had already been sent to disaster areas.  Enditem
