PARIS, Jan. 12 (Xinhuanet)
-- Iraq's interim president, Ghazi al-Yawar, arrived in Paris Wednesday
afternoon for an official visit less than three weeks before the Iraqi general
elections.
Al-Yawar is expected to meet French President Jacques Chirac on Thursday and Foreign Minister Michel Barnier and President of the National Assembly
Jean-Louis Debre Jean-Louis Debre on Friday before leaving on Saturday.
"This trip will provide the opportunity to
highlight France's determination at the highest levels to develop a dialogue
with the Iraqi authorities," French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Cecile Pozzo di
Borgo said at a news conference on Tuesday.
She
said the visit would also give Paris the chance to show "its commitment to the
Iraqi people and its support for the transition process now in progress, which
will allow the Iraqi people to regain power over their own destiny."
Yawar's visit comes just days after a female
French journalist was declared missing in Iraq.
Florence Aubenas of French daily Liberation went
missing with her Iraqi assistant last Wednesday after leaving her Baghdad hotel.
France opposed the American-led Iraqi war but last June supported a UN resolution to legitimate the Iraqi interim government with which France has established full diplomatic ties. Enditem |
