CAIRO, Jan. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Arab League Secretary
General Amr Moussa on Monday welcomed PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas's overwhelming
victory in Sunday's Palestinian presidential election, Egypt's official MENA
news agency reported.
The Palestinian Central Election
Committee (CEC) announced that Abbas was elected as new chairman of the
Palestinian Authority with62.32 percent of the votes.
Moussa told reporters that the election proved that
the Palestinians had institutions capable of running the democratic process.
He said the Arab League will continue to work hard to
help the Palestinians regain their rights in accordance with the pan-Arab
organization consistent policy of playing a constructive role in resolving
