Abbas wins Palestinian election: official results

   RAMALLAH, Jan. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- The Palestinian Central Elections Committee (CEC) announced on Monday afternoon that PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas won Sunday's presidential elections.

   The results showed Abbas gained 62.32 percent of the votes, achieving an overwhelming victory in the election.

   Chief of the CEC Hanna Nasser told reporters that 770,000 Palestinians managed to vote, accounting for 70 percent of the eligible voters.

   The following is the official election results.

   1. Mahmoud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, candidate of the mainstream Fatah movement garnered 62.32 percent of the ballot.

   2. Mustafa Barghouti, human rights activist, independent candidate, won 19.8 percent.

   3. Tayseer Khaled, candidate of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), got 3.5 percent.

   4. Bassam Al-Salhi, candidate of the People Party's of Palestine, got 2.69 percent.

   5. Abd Al Halim Al-Ashqar, independent candidate, got 2.68 percent.

   6. Sayyed Hussein Barakeh, independent candidate, got 1.27 percent.

   7. Abd Al Karim Shbair, independent candidate, got 0.67 percent. Enditem
