Abbas wins 62% of votes: official results

   RAMALLAH, Jan. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- The first official results Monday showed PLO chairman Mahmoud Abbas has been elected Palestinian president with 62.32 percent of the votes cast, Palestinian Central Elections Committee (CEC) announced on Monday afternoon.

   The results showed Abbas gained 62.32 percent of the votes, achieving an overwhelming victory in the election.

   Mustafa Barghouti, the independent candidate was ranked the second, who got about 19 percent. Other candidates shared the rest of the votes.

   Chief of the CEC Hanna Nasser told reporters that 770,000 Palestinians managed to vote, accounting for 70 percent of those who are entitled to vote in the election.

   Abbas is scheduled to address a televised speech on Monday evening to the Palestinian people to express gratitude and talk about the challenges that the Palestinians are facing in the coming future.  Enditem
