NAIROBI, Jan. 8 (Xinhuanet)-- Kenyan authorities have beefed up security in the capital city of Nairobi where a number of world leaders will witness the signing of a comprehensive Sudanese peacedeal on Sunday.

More armed officers from Kenya's General Service Unit (GSU) andother plainclothes officers were dispatched to the airport and hotels around the city and all other airports in the country, saidKenyan police spokesman Jaspher Ombati.

"The security situation in the capital city has been beefed up with deployment of armed GSU personnel to all five-star hotels in town and some residential estates mainly occupied by foreigners. We want to ensure that all visitors attending the signing of Sudan's comprehensive peace agreement are safe," Ombati told Xinhua by telephone.

At least 15 heads of state or their representatives were expected to attend the historic signing ceremony between Khartoum government and southern rebels.

The pact is aimed at ending the devastating civil war in Sudan that has claimed at least 1.5 million lives and displaced four million people since 1983. Enditem
