BEIJING, Jan. 8 -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has arrived in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo, on a mission to assess tsunami damage and the needs of survivors.

Annan arrived from Indonesia's Aceh, where he witnessed, firsthand, the devastation across the devastated province. Touching down in Colombo, he was met by Sri Lanka's Finance Minister. The UN chief went on to appeal for one billion US dollars, to cover five million survivors for the next six months.
