Tsunami death toll reaches 165,000

Indonesian officials now say that the national death toll has risen to nearly 102,000. This pushes the total number of fatalities across all tsunami-hit countries to at least 165,000.

    BEIJING, Jan. 8 -- Indonesian officials now say that the national death toll has risen to nearly 102,000. This pushes the total number of fatalities across all tsunami-hit countries to at least 165,000.

    Meanwhile, Xinhua News Agency reports that 600 Indonesian-Chinese in Aceh Province were killed by tidal waves, adding that as many another 6,500 have been left homeless. Diplomats from the Chinese embassy in Indonesia have visited the disaster zone, expressing their condolences, assessing the situation, and delivering aid and assistance.
