Abbas cancels campaigning in Jerusalem
www.chinaview.cn 2005-01-08 04:41:32

RAMALLAH, Jan. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Mahmoud Abbas canceled on Friday a rally in East Jerusalem to protest against Israeli security forces presence in the places he was scheduled to visit, Palestinian sources said.

East Jerusalem was Abbas's last visit during his campaign for Sunday's presidential elections, the sources said.

Friday is the last day of the campaign for all the seven candidates who are racing for the post of the president for the Palestinian National Authority (PNA).

The campaign began on Dec. 25 in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, where about 2 million Palestinians would head to the ballots on Sunday.

The sources also said Abbas, or Abu Mazen, does not want images of him being shadowed by Israeli security units in Jerusalem, fearing this would undermine his efforts to win over Palestinian militants who in the past have branded him a lackey of Israel. Enditem
