Powell arrives in Kenya to attend signing of Sudan peace deal
www.chinaview.cn 2005-01-08 02:01:04

NAIROBI, Jan. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- US Secretary of State Colin Powell arrived on Friday evening in Kenyan capital Nairobi for a two-day visit to witness Sunday's signing of a comprehensive Sudanese peace agreement.

"US Secretary of State Colin Powell arrives in Nairobi today from Sri Lanka, to participate in the signing ceremony for the Sudan peace accords on Sunday and to meet with government of Kenyaand other officials," the US Embassy in Nairobi said in a statement.

Powell came to Kenya after completing a tour of tsunami-ravagedcountries in Asia and attending the one-day tsunami crisis summit in Indonesian capital Jakarta..

The Sudanese government and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) will sign a comprehensive peace accord Sunday in Nairobi to end the 21-year-old civil war in Sudan, the longest-running civil war in Africa.

Powell has invested considerable time and effort in the search for peace in Sudan. The visit to Kenya will probably be among his last foreign trips before stepping down as secretary of state later this month. Enditem
