JAKARTA, Jan. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- An international emergency meeting on the aftermath of the Dec. 26 tsunami disaster concluded here Thursday with the adoption of a declaration on action to strengthen emergency relief, rehabilitation, reconstruction and prevention of natural disasters.

The heads of state or government, special envoys and heads of regional as well as international organizations attending the meeting agreed that the unprecedented devastation needs unprecedented global response in assisting the governments of affected nations to cope with such disaster, said the declaration.

The one-day Special ASEAN Leaders' Meeting on Aftermath of Earthquake and Tsunami was held here under the auspices of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Participants agreed to urgently mobilize additional resources to meet the emergency relief needs of victims in the affected countries.

Kofi Annan said at the opening session that the exact magnitudeof how many men, women and children perished on Dec. 26 may never be known and the real figure is likely to exceed 150,000.
