UNICEF Executive Director calls on Sri Lanka President

    COLOMBO, Jan. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Carol Bellamy, the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director, called on Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga on Monday, UNICEF official said here Tuesday.

    Kumaratunga briefed Bellamy and the Resident Representative TedChaiban about the program now in place to protect children made destitute by the catastrophe.

    She said the National Child Protection Authority, the UNICEF and Commissioners of Probation are working together in the Southern and Northern Provinces.

    Bellamy was pleased to learn that a Foster Parent Scheme and a legal adoption program are to be formulated.

    The President said there appears to be no shortage of food and clothes for children now in camps.

    In response to the President's appeal, the UNICEF agreed to help build temporary housing for the tsunami orphaned.

    The President said alternate locations would be found for children housed in schools by the time the school year begins on Jan. 20.

    Carol Bellamy said Sri Lanka is the first of the tsunami affected countries to restore normalcy within a short period of one week. Enditem
