BANGKOK, Jan. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Rumors that sea creatures are eating the corpses of people who died in last week's tsunamis have forced local fish sellers to stop selling seafood altogether and concentrate on freshwater fish, the Thai News Agency reported Monday.
Traders in Maharat Market in Thailand's southern Krabi Provincesaid Sunday that they were completely unable to sell any prawns, squid or other seafood due to the rumors that they were feeding off the corpses of tsunami victims.
Sucharit Boontaeng, who normally sells prawns in the market, said she had slashed the price of prawns from 100 baht (2.53 US dollars) to 80 baht (2.02 US dollars) per kg, but that she still had few takers for them.
According to another fish seller, Orana Wichitaksorn, around 30fish sellers in the market have had to pack up shop over the past week as a result of the scare.
But for sellers of freshwater fish, such as Monthira Limtam, the rumors have proved a boon.
Monthira told reporters that over the past week her sales had increased from 10,000 baht (253 US dollars) a day to around 30,000baht (760 US dollars). Enditem
