Egypt sets presidential referendum in September

   CAIRO, Jan. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- Egypt's parliament, the People'sAssembly, announced Saturday that it will name a candidate for thepresidency in March and a presidential referendum will be held inSeptember, the official MENA news agency reported.

   Safwat el-Sherif, secretary general of the ruling NationalDemocratic Party (NDP), said at an NDP general secretariat meetingthat legislative elections will be held in October.   Sherif gave incumbent President Hosni Mubarak credit forlaunching political, economic and social reforms in Egypt.   Mubarak, 76, has been ruling the country since 1981.
