Jordanian team to monitor Palestinian election

AMMAN, Dec. 31 (Xinhuanet) -- A Jordanian team, led by Senator Abdul Salam Majali, will travel to the Palestinian territories to monitor the Jan. 9 presidential elections, the state-run television reported Friday.

Jordan has received an official request from the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) to join in an international supervision mission for the election, said the report.

Majali, former Jordanian prime minister, headed a similar delegation to oversee the first Palestinian election in 1996.

The PNA has sent an official invitation to Jordan to supervise the upcoming election process, an official of the Palestinian Embassy in Amman said Monday.

The invitation came due to Jordan's important role, which reflects the Jordanian-Palestinian ties, said Atallah Khairi, the charge d'affaires of the Palestinian Embassy in Amman.

He said the PNA is keen to hold the election in a fair and transparent way, adding the Jordanians have experience in supervising the election.
