BUENOS AIRES, Dec. 31 (Xinhuanet) -- The death toll from a fire ina night club in central Buenos Aires climbs to 134, police said early Friday.

At least 260 others were injured in the fire on late Thursday, when some 1,500 people were believed listening to a rock band playinside the club. They were being treated in 14 hospitals, said thepolice.

However, some local reports said the people inside may be as many as 5,000 to 6,000.

Local television aired pictures of the bodies of some young victims and showed footage of rescue workers evacuating people from inside the club.

Firefighters said the fire had been extinguished, but five of their colleagues lost lives in the rescue operation.

Witness said the club, without any emergency exit and extinguisher, had all its exits closed when the fire erupted. There was also no security staff on the spot to direct evacuation.

Police said the cause of the fire was under investigation, while some witnesses said it might have been triggered by a pyrotechnical display. Enditem
