No Australian troops caught up in attack in Iraq

CANBERRA, Dec. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- No Australian troops were injuredin a fatal attack in Mosul, Iraq, that killed at least 22 people, the Australian Defense Force said on Wednesday.

Pentagon officials said at least 22 people were killed and 50 wounded in a rocket and mortar attack in Mosul Tuesday at a joint US-Iraqi military base in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.

Australia has some 50 troops training members of the Iraqi military on one of the main coalition bases outside Mosul.

An Australian defense spokesman said "There are certainly none (Australians) involved that we have been made aware of."

"We would know about it if we were involved. We are fairly confident to be not involved," said the spokesman.

It was reported 19 US soldiers were killed in the attack when an explosion tore through troops outside a US military dining tent.

The attack has resulted in the largest single loss of life of US personnel of any incident since the start of the Iraq war in March 2003.

Australia now maintains about 900 military personnel in and around Iraq.
