MACAO, Dec. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese President Hu
Jintao on Sunday viewed a school and visited a local family in Macao to know
about ordinary people's life in a place that he has set foot on for the first
time.
Hu, who arrived here Sunday
morning on a two-day trip to attend a celebration gathering marking the
5th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland and the inauguration of the
second-term government of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).
Hu was warmly welcomed during his visit to the High
School for Workers' Children, a half-a-century-old learning facility founded
originally to help underprivileged local workers' offspring.
Hu, also general secretary of the Central Committee
of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and chairman of the CPC Central Military
Commission, encouraged the students to study harder for Macao's development, and
donated books and pianos to the school.
The president then paid a visit to the home of a
local bus driver, chatted casually with the family, and wished the best for the
family's future.
Earlier in the day, Hu also attended the
inauguration ceremony of a local bridge and toured several sites of historical interest
in the city.
