Germany to help Afghanistan rebuild sugar plant

KABUL, Dec. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Germany in cooperation with a UN agency would help the post-war Afghanistan rebuild its only sugar factory, acting UN spokeswoman said Sunday.

"Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations(FAO) is to help Afghanistan to resume sugar production through a project financed by Germany," Ariane Quentiere told reporters here at a news briefing.

The only Afghan sugar factory, located in Baghlan Province 250 km north of Kabul and built by Germany in 1930s, was badly damagedand ceased operation due to over a quarter century of war and civil strife.

At present, Afghanistan imports 300,000 tons of sugar annually mostly from the neighboring countries, Pakistan in particular.

"Germany has recently signed six new projects with FAO for a total of 3.3 million US dollars which include the rehabilitation of the Afghan sugar factory.

"Since 2002, Germany has funded projects through FAO at a total value of 22.4 million US dollars of which 17.1 million have been earmarked for 14 projects on agriculture, food security and nut ration in Afghanistan," she noted.

Germany as a leading nation in rebuilding war-ravaged Afghanistan has also been hugely contributing in reformation of Afghan national police in the post-Taliban nation, she said. Enditem
