Six Palestinians killed in southern Gaza

    GAZA, Dec. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- The Israeli army continued a military offensive in the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis, killing six Palestinians including one child, Palestinian medics said.Medics said the six, including four militants, one young man and a 12-year-old child, were shot dead by Israeli fire, which also wounded 18 others.

    An Israeli army spokesman said the offensive was aimed at preventing Palestinian militants from firing homemade mortar shell sat Jewish settlements west of the town, and the operation would last as long as it deems necessary.

    Several Israeli tanks, armored vehicles and bulldozers backed by drones and helicopters stormed the western area of Khan Younis, and fierce clashes between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian militant sensued.

    During the offensive, the residents said the Israeli bulldozers destroyed at least 30 Palestinian houses in the al-Namsawi neighborhood in the town.
