Afghan military concludes operation to regain control of prison

    KABUL, Dec. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Afghan army operation to regain the control of Kabul's main jail was over as two rioters were killed,a soldier said.

 ;   "We have killed two insurgents at the prison and the riot is over," Zabiullah, 21, told Xinhua outside the jail.The incident begun after suspected al-Qaida inmates opened fire on the warders, killing at least four police officers."One ANA soldier was injured during the raid," a soldier coming out from the field said.

    The operation launched at 5:30 p.m. Friday evening after suspected al-Qaida inmates refused to surrender.Shoot out broke out between al-Qaida members and prison police Friday morning, in which 11 people were killed.Puli-e-Charkhi, 12 km east of Kabul, has been housing hundreds of war captives including Taliban and al-Qaida operatives and common criminals for the last three years after the fall of Taliban regime in late 2001.

    The ANA backed by police has used light weapons as well as rocket propelled-grenades in the operation while troops of NATO-led International Security Assistance Force were stationed in a nearby area with high alert. Enditem
