Three injured as Afghan army raids prison to regain control

KABUL, Dec. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- One soldier and two prisoners were injured Friday evening after the Afghan National Army (ANA) begun attacking Kabul's central jail of Puli-e-Charkhi to annihilate the rioters and establish control over it.

"One ANA soldier was injured during the raid," a soldier coming out from the field said.

"Another two prisoners were also injured in the fire exchange," an Afghan intelligence officer told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The operation launched at 5:30 p.m. Friday evening after suspected al-Qaeda inmates refused to surrender.

Shootout broke out between al-Qaeda members and prison police Friday morning, in which 11 people were killed.

Puli-e-Charkhi, 12 km east of Kabul, has been housing hundreds of war captives including Taliban and al-Qaeda operatives and common criminals for the last three years after the fall of Taliban regime in late 2001.

The ANA backed by police has used light weapons as well as rocket propelled-grenades in the operation while troops of NATO-led International Security Assistance Force were stationed in a nearby area with high alert. Enditem
