Pakistan rejects statements by India on its weapons acquisition program

ISLAMABAD, Dec. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- Pakistan Monday rejected statements by India on its weapons acquisition program as "disturbing" and urged it to maintain symmetry.

"We must restore symmetry and bring stability to the region," Foreign Office spokesman Masood Khan told a weekly briefing.

Indian Ministers for External Affairs and Defense have voiced concern over the 1.3 billion US dollars assistance program to Pakistan and sale of F-16 aircraft.

"Pakistan is pursuing a modest program to fill up the gap, thatemerged during the '90s, due to the huge US sanctions, which crippled our capability," the spokesman said.

Masood Khan said Pakistan does not want to match India and enter an arms race. "India's shopping list for weapons is non-exhaustive and there should be a sense of balance," he added.

Referring to the 95 billion US dollars weapons acquisition program over the next 15 years by India, the spokesman said defense analysts and international defense think tanks have noted the massive purchase of weapons by India from all over the world. Enditem
