Ruling party satisfied with Tanzanian civic poll results

DAR ES SALAAM, Dec. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Tanzania's ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party (CCM) said it was satisfied with the local government elections that wound up with a re-run in Dar es Salaam last Sunday.

CCM National Publicity Secretary, Tanzanian Minister of Home Affairs Omar Ramadhan Mapuri said the ruling party had garnered over 90 percent of the votes countrywide, though he did not give details about how many streets and villages CCM had won.

The party's mass mobilization department is processing the data and preparing a final report on the civic polls, held on November 21 and 28 with a re-run in 145 streets in the country's biggest city Dar es Salaam on December 5.

The original polls to choose street chiefs held in Dar es Salaam on November 28 was complained to be disorganized due to improper preparation and had to be re-scheduled on December 5.

The civic polls are designed to elect village and street leaders before the east African country's parliamentary and presidential elections slated for next year.

The Tanzanian ruling party, which has won all the presidential elections since the country introduced the multiparty system in 1996, is widely expected to win the third general elections next year.
