Israel to attend Mideast summit if US supports it: official

JERUSALEM, Dec. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- A senior Israeli official said on Monday that Israel would take part in an international peace conference on the Middle East scheduled in London early next year if Washington supports such a summit.

The official made the remarks in response to media reports that Britain had won US agreement to hold such a conference, Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported Monday on its website.

It appears that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is unenthusiastic about such a conference, but Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, who would represent Israel, favors the idea, added the report.

According to the official, Israel has reservations with such conferences because they may herald an enforced agreement.

The British Daily Telegraph newspaper, quoting unidentified senior diplomatic sources, reported on Monday that the conference would probably be announced after the Jan. 9 Palestinian presidential election and would depend on the moderate former Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas to be elected as president to replace late Yasser Arafat.

The conference, planned for late January or early February, is likely to be attended by foreign ministers but it is not yet clear whether Israel will send a delegation, said the Daily Telegraph.

There is no immediate comment from British officials on the report.  Enditem
