Zimbabweans among the most educated in Africa
www.chinaview.cn 2004-12-02 00:24:34

HARARE, Dec. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- Zimbabwe's education system has ensured the country of one of the most well educated populations in Africa, according to the New Ziana on Wednesday.

Citing a UN-sponsored report on Zimbabwe, the New Ziana said bythe mid-1990s, the country had achieved near universal primary education, with literacy rates of 15 to 24 year olds rising from 95 to 98 percent between 1992 and 1999.

Unfortunately for Zimbabwe, millions of well-educated Zimbabweans have migrated to other countries in search of employment.

According to official figures from Britain, there are some 100,000 Zimbabweans in that country. However, the New Ziana said the true figure is more likely to be around one million. Many of the Zimbabweans in Britain are nurses and teachers.

Similarly, South Africa has an estimated two million Zimbabweans and, according to Refugees International, only 5,000 have applied for refugee status. Enditem
